Growing The Best Flowers in a Small Garden

From experience, the most important thing I have learned is that choosing the right plants is crucial for creating a thriving and enchanting small garden.

Important Considerations you need to account for are:

The plant sizes that work togethers, compact, but vary sizes to make the perfect small garden bed and container. Another thing to consider is the Seasonal Blooms; choosing flowers that provide long-lasting color throughout the growing season.

Here are my top picks for more dramatic flowers:

  • Zinnias: Zinnias are pure joy! These amazing flowers are so easy to grow and within one plant you get so many different looks depending on the growth stage they are at. It’s like having a bouquet that evolves right before your eyes, adding depth and beauty to any garden. Zinnias bring such happiness to me, they are cheerful and elegant in one package.
  • Dahlias: You know how much I love these beauties and they are my garden muse, but I have discovered how much I also love the short dahlias. I have shared the stunning types of dahlias and my favorites, but I am here to tell you not to discard the small compact dahlias. They are absolute perfection in a flower bed and container gardening. Dahlias were the first flower I planted in my garden when I began gardening in this home, and they will always hold a special place in my heart.
  • Sunflowers: I had never been a big fan, until I grew this amazing sunflower, the teddy bear sunflower – what an incredible statement they make! When they say that sunflowers are cheerful, they are not lying. They have become a ray of sunshine in my life. There’s something magical about seeing them sway in the breeze, standing tall and bright, reminding me of resilience and warmth.

Here are my top picks for more textural flowers:

  • Yarrow: This plant will be in my garden every year, it is stunning on your garden border. I love that dreamy texture you get in a border. It adds softness and the garden feels more natural. I can’t imagine a garden without this delicate and charming flower.
  • Paper Daisies: I discovered these interesting and unique flowers that work so well to add dimension and texture to a border. I am so glad I grew these and will do it again. Such a fun flower, they make me smile every time I see them.
  • Celosia: Celosia is a showstopper, no question about it. These are a wow! They make my heart skip a beat. I will grow these every year, they grow so large and provide so many cut flowers. Celosia’s bold presence is a must for anyone looking to add drama and excitement to their garden.

This year I grew the floret farm zinnia collection. The alpenglow is a stunner, but I am not sure if it grew so little because of the weather or something else. I suspect is the weather, since I had issues with other plants running behind.

the peach colors with the pink edges is perfection and it is a very large scale flower that stands out so nicely in the garden. I love it with yarrow, they compliment each other so well. I will be growing this beauty again, the scale and colors are incredible!

Arranging Plants in a Small Garden

This year, I changed things around. Every year I grew only Dahlias in the flower patch, but this year I decided to create an english garden look and use all the flowers mentioned before in the same space.

Arranging a collage of flowers can make your small garden feel more spacious and inviting:

  1. Layering: Place taller plants at the back, like sunflowers, and shorter ones like yarrow and short zinnias on the front. This creates depth and a beautiful soft layering effect that adds drama to the garden.
  2. Vertical Space: Use hanging baskets or trellises for climbing roses and other vertical growers, such as clematis.
  3. Color Schemes: Stick to a cohesive color palette to avoid visual clutter. Opt for colors that work together. by complementing each other. Take a look at how to work with colors in your garden but, never miss doing what brings you joy.

Arranging Pots in a Small Garden

One of the things that makes a big impact in my garden comes from backyard planting ideas that uses pots in clusters and provide a story in each area.

  • Layering: Use taller plants like dahlias in the back or center and shorter ones like short zinnias, petunias and daisies, as well as herbs on the edge. This will add visual appeal.
  • Grouping: cluster plants with similar water and sunlight needs together. For example, yarrow and petunias can thrive in similar conditions and make great companions.
  • Vertical Space: Incorporate hanging pots to bring the eye up and use all the space you have. Hanging a couple of baskets on a tree creates a lot of dimension. I removed the bottom tree branches to open it up and be able to hang beautiful flower baskets.

In my garden this year I took so many garden design pictures to share with you, because the overflowing beauty. One examples is the layering of hanging baskets. It is all about the flower combinations for planters and baskets.

I experimented with layering two beautiful flower baskets, one with a sculpture to allow the black-eyed susan to go upward and another with stunning flowers that was placed hire up in the tree and the flowers spill down. Take a look at this video to learn all the amazing flowers I incorporated on the hanging basket.
