How to Block Neighbors’ Views into Your Yard
When I began transforming my yard from grass to my oasis, all I wanted was to create privacy. I was so desperate, and I mean extremely in need of not having neighbors see all I did in the garden and even inside my home. All that kept running in my mind is that song that says “somebody is watching youuuuuu”.
I began planting evergreens everywhere to make it happen quickly. But I will be real here, like always… I am so grateful that most did not survive.
Yes, I said it, happy. Why?
Because my life was about to shift in an extreme way and creating a healing oasis became my main focus. You can read more about my journey of finding GARDEN WITH PURPOSE | Gardening Changed my Life! to learn about this amazing life transition.
Now that I had the time and my priorities had shifted, I took the time to design what will become my healing oasis by many backyard privacy ideas that I will be sharing with you to transform your experience.
I am about to spill all my secrets to creating an amazing oasis that is ‘your’ space and feels welcoming and private for you to enjoy. It is all about how you feel in the space.

1. Planting Trees and Shrubs
One of the most beautiful and natural methods I use to block neighbors’ is by planting trees and shrubs. This method not only provides privacy but also adds so much beauty to your garden.
PROS:
- Natural Feel: Trees and shrubs soften a garden space and merges right into a natural environment, creating harmony and beauty.
- Environmental Impact: Trees are a great way to improve air quality, especially if you live in an urban setting like mine. One big impact that is so important to me is that it will provide a habitat for wildlife and reduce noise pollution.
- All Seasons Privacy: Evergreen trees and shrubs offer privacy throughout the year. Select the right plant and get all the benefits.
CONS:
- Takes Time to Grow: Depending on the species, it can take years for trees and shrubs to reach the height you require for privacy. Make sure you plan your garden to prevent wasting any time in achieving privacy. I made a mistake in my garden that I showed in the YouTube video, and decided to live with it. But take your time designing and do your research.
- Maintenance Required: Some plants take more maintenance than others. Research the type of plant not only for size, but maintenance requirements.
When you are incorporating backyard privacy ideas, such as adding trees, do the research. You do not want a tree taking over your space. Let me tell you a story on why not to always trust a nursery you visit; I went to a local one, and though I mentioned the size and context of where I lived, I was told about a gorgeous tree.
I will admit, I fell in love with the tree, but come to find out, it grows 30 feet and 20 or more feet wide. I have been able to control it so far, but I know it won’t work in the long term.
That was a hard lesson for me to learn, so take it from me and design, research, and enjoy the outcome.
One thing to think about when selecting your tree, which I always take into account, is movement and sound. Privacy is also about noise pollution, and a tree is a perfect way to add that layer to decrease it.
Both sound and movement elevate the experience and soften the fact that you are trying to block something. Leaves moving in the wind and the rustling of them create tranquility in the garden.
The right selection, in the right location, will create a calming effect in my backyard, and now it feels like a calming retreat.

How To Create Privacy in a Backyard Without a Fence?
There are ways to create privacy and define your space to make you feel more comfortable in the space.
1. Using Outdoor Curtains, Trellises or Screens
Can I tell you my biggest secret? I have created so much privacy by layering different beautiful flowering plants. Some of the ones I love using and have worked so well have been:
- Hydrangeas
- Clematis
- Honeysuckle
- Blue Potato Vines ( I talk all about this amazing vine and how much privacy it has provided on my May Garden Tour Video)
- Roses
- Vegetables like tomatoes, beans, and squash.
Check out the YouTube video to learn more about each of the flowering plants and how to use them. I show you how to think beyond the fence line to create privacy and add style.
If you want to create a paradise, flowering plants are the solution that will provide an uplifting mood and create a vibrant, full-of-life feel.
| SOLUTION | PROS | CONS | FEEL |
| Trees and Shrubs | Natural look, environmental benefits. | Takes time to grow, some may require maintenance and a lot of watering to start. | Tranquility, nature-enveloped. |
| Trellises with Plants | Beautiful hardscape and customizable. | Plant care, support needed and tools may be required. | Provides an artistic touch to the garden. |

Below is the most amazing blue potato vine that create a high level of privacy and provides blooms from spring through fall, until the first freeze.

2. Creating a Living Wall
You can create a vertical garden in an innovative and great way to create Privacy. There are definitely amazing pros to this approach, but be aware that you also have to deal with some cons and take those into consideration when deciding what kind of living wall to create.
PROS:
- Eco-Friendly: Living walls contribute to a greener space and therefore improve air quality.
- Visually Appealing: These are so unique and can add such a beautiful and impactful statement in your garden.
CONS:
- Requires Maintenance: These creative walls do require watering, pruning, and care to keep the plants healthy and the shape you desire.
- Cost: Installing living walls can be pricey, depending on the size and plants you use to create one.
Living walls can be one of the biggest statements in your garden and add privacy to your yard. It is a unique solution that can add so much interest and create a great atmosphere.
I did not want the maintenance, but I love the green walls. Therefore, I found a solution by using evergreens to have a similar effect, be more cost-effective, require less maintenance, and provide a high level of privacy.

How Can I Make My Open Backyard More Private?
1. Pergola with Drapes
One of the fastest ways that add drama and privacy to a garden space is using drapes. If you are a beginner or don’t have the budget for a large garden structure, I have some ways for you to create privacy with outdoor drapes.
Keep it simple; you can still get a lot out of this solution.
PROS:
- Easy Build: You can create a pergola or wall with planters and containers as needed to create privacy where it is required.
- Provides Shades: This solution can provide you with privacy, but also add shade where you need it.
- Stylish: Pergolas add architectural interest and elegance to a garden space.
- Multifunctional: These structures can be flexible in use; dining, lounging, meditating, or entertaining.
CONS:
- Cost: Depending on your design direction and the materials you use to create your pergola, the price can be high.
- Space Required: A Pergola needs sufficient space in your garden, which may not work for every small space.
If you are looking for an economical solution, use drapes and create a simple structure to support them. Using two containers and adding a vertical post on each and a post across to install a curtain rod would work just as well. (Take into account that the amount of container you will need are based on the length you want to cover. Make sure you add enough weight to the container to support the drape structure and movement when you open and close it, as well as the wind.
This is just as beautiful and can create a retreat feel where you can enjoy your outdoor area with style.
Adding shade and privacy makes it perfect for many activities, whether passive or active.

2. Tall Planters and Containers
There are simple solutions that add so much to a space and provide a sense of privacy that makes you feel comfortable in the area you are defining.
PROS:
- Portable: you can move planters and containers as you need.
- Customizable: Choose plants that you love and work in the specific area you want to define.
- Adds Color: I love containers because they provide me with the perfect opportunity to add a dwarf tree, flowers, or a beautiful trellis covered with flowers.
CONS:
- Limited Height: This solution may have a limit on the height you can add to the pot. The larger the container, the higher you can go with your trellis, but make sure you support it appropriately.
- Watering: Containers require watering often and regular care, like fertilizing and deadheading.
One of my favorite ways to add privacy to a corner of my seating area is to use Dwarf Japanese Maples. They are low-maintenance, soft-looking, and anchor an area beautifully.
But here is a tip that you need to think about. Think of your raised garden beds as containers that you can add trellises to create an additional layer for privacy.

| SOLUTION | PROS | CONS | FEEL |
| Living Wall | Visually appealing | Can get costly depending on the design, requires maintenance. | Lush and invigorating. |
| Pergola with Drapes | Provides shade and add style to a garden. | Expensive, space required. | Elegant |
| Tall Planters | Portable and customizable | Limited in height and requires frequent watering. | Connected to nature. |

How to Separate Yards Without a Fence?
You can create visual barriers to separate yards, even when you don’t have a fence.
Some of the methods you can use to create that intimate and cozy space are:
- Creating Zones with Outdoor Furniture.
Design your garden to have different zones. I divided my garden to have a patio gathering area, a kitchen garden, a meditation space, a secret garden, and an entry grow garden.
Defining the space creates more intimate areas where you can add privacy from your neighbors in an easier way. Small spaces to work with add layers of interest and intrigue to the garden. It makes you want to explore and makes you look forward to seeing how that area transforms with time.
Organizing your garden by creating zones with outdoor furniture can make your backyard feel like an extension of your home.
With each area tailored to specific activities, you will be enhancing your overall outdoor living experience.
Other ways to separate yards without a fence are:
- Create pathways to have the right flow.
- Use raised garden beds to enhance the natural beauty of your garden.
- Planting Hedges to have an evergreen that defines your space all season.
- Decorative panels, arch trellises can provide transitions in the garden. Don’t think of just the perimeter, slowly create privacy, from semi-privacy with trellises to the hedges or trees on the perimeter of your yard, strategically placed.
- My favorite, easiest, and most affordable way to add flexible privacy is using an outdoor umbrella. I found a great umbrella that rotates all around and allows me to add shades in different spots and change the privacy location. (I added a patio umbrella base that has made it more stable)
Yes, I have a fence all around, but you can also create rooms within your open space, like I have done, to be more effective in creating privacy.

Decorating My Pergola With Lights

Hi Melba,
This is a great post and informative. It’s amazing to me when we visit garden centers and employees give incorrect information.
We have had this happen in the past. I agree with you. We have to do our own research.
Thank you so much, Cindy! So glad you find it helpful. We may rely too much on garden centers and many just get plants that don’t work in our area. The hardest lesson I have learned is doing my research.
